What to Wear to Your Family Photo Session: A Simple Guide to Looking Your Best
Preparing for a family photo session can be both exciting and a bit daunting, especially when it comes to deciding what everyone should wear. The right outfits can make a significant difference in the overall look and feel of your photos. Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect attire for your family portrait session.
#1 Coordinate, Don’t Match
Aim for a coordinated look, don’t have everyone match too much. Choose a color palette of two to three complementary colors and have each family member wear different shades or variations of those colors. This creates a harmonious look without being overly matchy-matchy.
#2 Consider the Location
In beautiful Washington, most family sessions take place outside! Your outfit choices should complement the setting of your photo session. For example, if you’re having your session at the beach, light, airy colors like pastels, whites, and soft blues work wonderfully. For a park setting, earthy tones, greens, and warm hues blend beautifully. For sessions that take place at home, I like to recommend colors that compliment your color scheme at home.
#3 Think About Comfort
Comfort is key, especially for younger children. Make sure everyone’s outfits are not only stylish but also comfortable to wear. Avoid scratchy fabrics or tight clothing that might make kids fidgety. When everyone feels good in what they’re wearing, it shows in the photos.
#3 Add Layers and Textures
Layering and adding different textures to your outfits can add depth and interest to your photos. Think denim jackets, scarves, cardigans, or vests. These elements can make your photos more visually appealing and add a sense of dimension.
#4 Avoid Logos and Busy Patterns
Steer clear of clothing with large logos, text, or overly busy patterns. These elements can be distracting and take the focus away from the family. Opt for classic patterns like stripes, plaids, or solids that won’t overpower the image.
#5 Accessorize Wisely
Accessories can add a nice finishing touch to your outfits. Simple jewelry, hats, or a stylish belt can enhance your look without being too distracting. For children, consider cute headbands or bowties for a bit of charm.
#6 Plan Ahead
Give yourself plenty of time to plan and try on outfits well before the session. This allows you to make any necessary adjustments and ensures everyone is happy with their look.
If children younger than 10 are part of your session, I highly recommend bringing a backup outfit in case their clothes get dirty before or during the shoot. For mothers with babies, a backup outfit is necessary as well in case there is an accident. Over preparing will insure your session is successful!
